Overview
St Andrews Christian College in Victoria has partnered with Skodel to assist in using student voices to tailor their support. This collaboration focuses on three core objectives:
1. Incorporate Student Voice
St Andrews prioritises listening to its students, recognising the importance of their insights in shaping effective wellbeing strategies. By integrating student feedback, St Andrews ensures that their wellbeing initiatives are reflective of actual student experiences and needs.
“At St Andrews, we believe in empowering our students to voice their needs and take charge of their wellbeing. Our partnership with Skodel provides us with the tools to tailor our wellbeing initiatives to our unique school context. By adjusting our check-ins and making the feedback process as relevant as possible, we’re not just listening to our students; we’re taking action based on their feedback. This approach ensures that every student feels supported and understood on their individual wellbeing journey.” – Marina Heading, Wellbeing Leader
2. Empower students to self manage
St Andrews encourages students to take an active role in managing their own wellbeing. Post check-in, Skodel facilitates this by providing tailored suggested steps that help students to plan and support their wellbeing, fostering a sense of autonomy and resilience.
3. Meeting the needs of their community
- Finding the right frequency: Being mindful of the time that students and teachers have to avoid survey fatigue for students and information overload for teachers. Each interaction is meaningful.
- Context-specific insights: The school tailors the check-ins across age ranges and bases it on the support and resources they have in place. This means the insights can be responded to effectively.
What the data tells St Andrews
The data gained respects the roles and training of educators in the area of wellbeing. It focuses on delivering insights that are actionable within the educational setting and in alignment with their professional expertise. It helps:
- Identify student readiness to learn by understanding if students feel motivated and prepared at the start of the term or unprepared and low on motivation.
- Understand the influence of school-related factors on student wellbeing and readiness to learn such as putting pressure on myself or not able to focus.
- Focus on areas within the school’s control to support and improve student wellbeing.
Note: not actual data, just for illustrative purposes to demonstrate the visuals St Andrews is using to understand student voices in wellbeing.
